History
Wesley Guest House has been owned by the Wilson family since 1948; the much loved home is owned and run today by Graham Wilson. Graham has renovated his home to ensure a warm welcome and comfortable stay for all his visitors.
Epworth's main claim to fame is that it was the birthplace of the founder of Methodism, John Wesley. Wesley was born at the Old Rectory in 1703, along with his hymn writing brother Charles who was born in 1707. He returned many times to Epworth, giving sermon's from the Market Cross and from his father, Samuel's tomb, next to St Andrew's church. Samuel was the rector of Epworth from 1696 to 1735.
You can visit the nearby Wesley family home ‘The Old Rectory Museum’, as well as the Market Cross, where John delivered rousing sermons. Samuel Wesley’s grave at St Andrew’s Church is also of historical interest along with the beautiful Wesley Methodist Memorial Church. In 2003 the historic town of Epworth was the focus of world celebrations to mark the 300th anniversary of the birth of John Wesley, founder of world Methodism.
For those interested in the roots of Methodism and John Wesley, there are volumes of the published Wesley diaries on display in the house.
